Alice Russell, the missing hiker, is of great interest to investigator Aaron Falk of the Federal Police. Because Alice was privy to information about both the individuals and the firm she worked for, she knew secrets.

The four women who are coming back tell Falk a story of their days spent in the isolated Australian outback, one of abuse, dread, and broken trust. Additionally, Falk starts to feel that certain hazards were considerably more pervasive than everyone realised when he investigates Alice's abduction.
