1937. Dr. Ho Fengshan, the general consul of China, and his American spouse, Grace, are stationed in Vienna. Grace, shy and uncomfortable with the social duties of ambassadors' spouses, feels like an outcast in a city that is starting to feel the Nazi dragnet. Dr. Ho asks Grace to maintain her distance from her Jewish teacher Lola Schnitzler as the two become acquainted.
