Ruby Landry is a cheerful, uncomplicated woman who lives in the middle of the bayou. However, innocence is fleeting.

Ruby Landry has only ever known her alcoholic, exiled grandfather Grandpère Jack and her devoted guardian, Grandmère Catherine, a Cajun spiritual healer. Ruby is thankful for everything, even if she sometimes feels as depressed as the wind blowing through the Spanish moss when she thinks of her deceased mother and enigmatic father. Her life is full of promise and optimism, particularly as her attraction to the attractive Paul Tate develops into an enigmatic and amazing love. Ruby first sees her father's visage in a fading photo, and it is then that she discovers a startling blackmail plot and a despicable falsehood that must now be exposed. After learning these shocking facts, she is saddened when Grandmère passes away and goes in search of her father at his enormous house in New Orleans. There, in a home of deceit, insanity, and horrendous suffering, Ruby clings to her memories of Paul in order to survive. Because right now, only their love can rescue her.
