Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story

Artist, activist, and lead singer of the Irish rock group U2, Bono, has written a book titled Surrender. It is an honest, irreverent, personal, and deep account of the extraordinary life he has had, the difficulties he has overcome, and the friends and family who have supported and changed him.

"My goal in writing this book was to capture in depth what I had only been able to sketch in songs before. The people, locations, and opportunities throughout my life. For me, the term "surrender" has a lot of significance. Having my hands up (literally) while growing up in Ireland in the 1970s, it was not an instinctive idea. a term that I just circled while gathering ideas for the book. I'm still having trouble obeying this most humble of directives. In the band, in my union, in my religion, and in my activism. The tale of one pilgrim's lack of advancement is told in Surrender, along with some lightheartedness. [Bono]

Numerous articles have been published on Bono's career since he is one of the most well-known musicians in the world and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED). However, Bono takes up the pen in Surrender and writes about his extraordinary life and the people he has lived it with for the first time. With his distinct voice, Bono transports us back to his formative years in Dublin, where he experienced the unexpected death of his mother at the age of fourteen. He also discusses U2's remarkable rise to prominence in the rock industry, as well as his more than two decades of activism fighting against AIDS and extreme poverty. In his honest, humorous, and introspective writing, Bono lets readers inside his life and the relationships—friends, family, and faith—that have uplifted, tested, and molded him.

The subtitle of Surrender, 40 Songs, One Story, alludes to the forty chapters in the book, each of which is titled after a song by U2. Forty original drawings by Bono are also included in Surrender and may be found throughout the book.
