The short tales in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series brought Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson enormous fame and turned the Strand magazine around when they were originally published. The collection is filled with well-known cases, such as "The Red-Headed League," "The Blue Carbuncle," and "The Speckled Band," and the investigator is at the pinnacle of his abilities. Even though Holmes became known for his infallibility, Conan Doyle demonstrated his own feminism and realism in the first tale, "A Scandal in Bohemia," by having the great detective vanquished by Irene Adler, a woman.
