The last installment of the Daevabad Trilogy, in which an idealistic djinn prince and a con artist team up to prevent a terrible civil war in a magical country.

Daevabad has collapsed.

Banu Manizheh, the leader of the Nahid, and her revived commander, Dara, must attempt to mend their deteriorating relationship and bring peace to a warring and divided people after a cruel conquest robbed the city of its enchantment.

However, the worst monsters from Dara's dark background have come to light due to the bloodletting and the death of his beloved Nahri. He will have to confront some painful facts about his past and surrender to people he once viewed as adversaries in order to defeat them.

Now that they are safe in Cairo and have avoided the deadly politics of Daevabad as well as their bloodthirsty families, Nahri and Ali must make some difficult decisions of their own. While Nahri takes solace in the comforts and routines of her human home, she is troubled by the thought that a new tyrant is in control of the people she left behind, including those who loved her and thought she was a savior. Ali is compelled to turn around and look back in order to save his city and the remaining members of his family. While seeking solace in his mother's native country, he learns that his bond with the married woman is far more profound than he had thought, endangering not just his friendship with Nahri but also his faith.

Nahri, Ali, and Dara realize that in order to change the world, they might have to battle people they once loved and stand up for people they once hurt. This realization comes as peace becomes increasingly difficult and former players reappear.
