In 1943, Elise Sontag is a normal fourteen-year-old from Iowa who is aware of the war but keeps a safe distance from it. Then, her father—who has been a lawful resident of the United States for almost 20 years—is unexpectedly detained on charges of having Nazi sympathies. After the family is sent to a camp for internment in Texas, Elise feels as though everything she has ever loved and known has been taken away from her, including her identity, behind the barbed wire and armed guards.

Meeting fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American youngster from Los Angeles, is the only thing keeping Elise sane at the camp; their friendship gives Elise hope that she will one day resume her previous life before the war. Elise and Mariko, a young American couple living in the desert together, cling to the hope that their future lies outside the boundaries.
