Florida's time is running out. A strong storm is headed towards a little village on the southeast coast as the state's infrastructure is slowly being destroyed by destructive weather patterns and rising sea levels. Electrical line worker Kirby Lowe, his expectant wife Frida, and their two boys, Flip and Lucas, brace themselves for the worst. Kirby ventures out into the strong gusts to look for the boys when they disappear just before the storm makes landfall. When Frida is left alone, she enters into early labor and gives birth to a strange kid, Wanda, whom she names after the terrible storm that brings her society to an all-time low.

Wanda grows as Florida keeps falling apart. Wanda goes from infancy to maturity, adjusting to the people who have remained in a region abandoned by society as well as the changing terrain. In the end, Wanda finds adventure, love, and purpose in a place that nature has rebuilt, even if she loses her family.

The Light Pirate, which is divided into four sections: power, water, light, and time, mimics the rhythms of the elements and the sometimes rapid, occasionally sluggish breakdown of the world as we know it. It's a contemplation of the shifts we'd like not to see, the future we'd prefer not to meet, and a return to the splendor and ferocity of an uncharted territory.
