In 1950, anthropologist Paul Tallent recruits a young physician named Norton Perina for an expedition to the isolated Micronesian island of Ivu'ivu to locate a forgotten tribe that has been reported missing. When they reach that tribe, they also discover a group of woodland dwellers they name "The Dreamers," who prove to be very long-lived but becoming ever more elderly. Suspecting that a rare turtle may be the cause of their longevity, Perina kills the turtle and smuggles its flesh back to the United States, unable to resist the promise of endless life. After providing scientific evidence to support his theory, he wins the Nobel Prize and international renown, but he quickly learns that the remarkable property comes at a horrible cost. His own demons take hold as events swiftly spiral out of his control, with disastrous results.
