BookBrowse Note: January 9, 2006: James Frey, author of A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard, was accused of fabricating important details of his novels in a Smoking Gun story. Citing court records, police records, and law enforcement agent interviews, they refuted many of Frey's assertions about being charged with a crime, serving time in prison, and being on the run.
Frey acknowledged that he had "embellished central details" in A Million Little Pieces and retracted statements he made in the book in an interview with the Smoking Gun.
26 January, 2006. Although it first supported Frey, the publisher said that after more interrogation of the writer, the company has "sadly come to the realization that a number of facts have been altered and incidents embellished." A publisher's note and an author's note will be included in every A Million Little Pieces version going forward.
