Sometimes the only way to really discover yourself is to lose everything. Sandy Shortt has been fixated with missing objects ever since her childhood friend vanished twenty years ago. Her only focus becomes locating the lost items, such as the vehicle keys she forgot or the lone sock that disappears in the washing machine. Sandy's life's job is to locate those who have disappeared from their loved ones, therefore it should come as no surprise that she does this. Sandy's growing obsession has her family perplexed and worried. Her obsession with finding these lost individuals causes her to lose herself in the process, further alienating her parents who are unable to comprehend her desire. She sacrifices her life to save bereaved families from their miseries and to give them a glimmer of hope. Among such inconsolable individuals is Jack Ruttle. He's recruited Sandy Shortt to help him locate his brother Donal, who disappeared a year ago. However, Sandy disappears as well before she can provide Jack with the knowledge he so urgently needs, and Jack is left looking for both his brother and the one woman who really understood his suffering. Sandy is running through the park one minute, and then she is lost and unable to find her way. The way is blocked. Nothing is recognizable. After a clearing ahead exposes a camp site, Sandy finds the unthinkable there: she has unintentionally discovered the location—and people—she has been searching for her whole life, a place where all the missing people go.
