Virginia Woolf wrote an extensive essay titled A Room of One's Own. The article, which was first published on October 24, 1929, was based on a series of lectures she gave in October 1928 at two women's colleges at Cambridge University: Newnham College and Girton College. The manuscript for the series of lectures titled Women and Fiction, as well as the lengthier essay, are classified as nonfiction even though the essay uses a fictitious narrator and narrative to examine women as authors and characters in fiction. The article is recognized as a feminist work because it makes a case for women authors to have a real and symbolic place in a patriarchal literary heritage.
