As part of her charitable work aimed at rehabilitation, Margaret Prior, an upper-class lady recuperating from a suicide attempt, has started going to the women's wing of Millbank Prison, the most gruesome institution in Victorian London. Margaret becomes more and more enthralled with Selina Dawes, an intriguing spiritualist, a prisoner who seems to be innocent among Millbank's killers and ordinary thieves. After a séance she was leading tragically went wrong, killing an old matron and seriously upsetting a young lady, Selina was sent in jail. Margaret is dragged into a twilight realm of ghosts and shadows, wild spirits, and unsightly desires despite her initial scepticism about Selina's abilities. Eventually, she is compelled to devise a desperate scheme to ensure both Selina's and her own liberation.
