All the Birds in the Sky

Middle school saw the inexplicable breakup of childhood friends Patricia Delfine, a witch, and Laurence Armstead, a crazy scientist. However, as adults, they both end themselves in a near-future version of San Francisco, where Patricia collaborates with a tiny group of other magicians to covertly treat the world's mounting medical problems and Laurence is a prodigy in engineering. However, someone is determined to kill the world or rescue it, and to bring them back together.
