Following their terrible performance at the year's most prestigious social function in affluent Philadelphia on New Year's Eve 1942, Ellis Hyde's father, a retired army colonel who is already ashamed that his son was colorblind and hence unable to fight in World War II, cuts off Ellis and Maddie's financial support.
Ellis, much to Maddie's dismay, determines that the only way to win back his father's favour is to accomplish something his father tried and very publicly failed at: he will hunt the fabled Loch Ness monster, and if he finds it, he will clear his father's name and win back his father's favor—as well as his money. In the middle of a war, the three go to Scotland with their affluent socialite buddy Hank.
Hitler is another monster wreaking havoc over Europe, and the two men go out every day to hunt him down. And Maddie has to start figuring out who she is and what she wants now that she is by herself in a new nation.
The story of Maddie's societal awakening is told throughout the book. She learns about the harsh truths of life, the wonders of nature, her connection to forces greater than herself, female companionship, and, in the end, love.
