There is something awful out there that has to be avoided. After catching a sight of it, someone feels motivated to use lethal force. Nobody is aware of its nature or origin.

There are still a few dispersed survivors five years after it started, including Malorie and her two little children. She's lived in an abandoned home by the river and has always fantasised about running away to somewhere secure.
