The annual Winter Carnival in Lake Eden, Minnesota is getting ready, and Hannah Swensen is ready to bake a storm at her well-known store, The Cookie Jar. Unfortunately, celebrity lifestyle expert Connie Mac was given the distinction of designing the official Winter Carnival cake—a half-baked concept, in Hannah's view. She believes that Connie Mac is similar to the delicious treats she makes on her cable TV culinary show—they're light, sweet, and aesthetically pleasing, but they're also probably going to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.
Hannah's suspicions are validated when the limo driven by Connie Mac arrives in town. It seems that the "Cooking Sweetheart" of America is really tyrannical, irritable, and overbearing. When Hannah gets at The Cookie Jar, she discovers that Connie Mac is dead in her pantry after being hit by a blow to the head with one of Hannah's renowned blueberry muffins, and the Winter Carnival cake has burned to a crisp. This is when everything finally blow out.
Hannah discovers the next day that The Cookie Jar's kitchen murder scene is off-limits due to police orders. She bakes but she doesn't have an oven, and the carnival is coming up soon. Hannah's only option is to devise a scheme to save her company—by tracking down the murderer herself.
