He would need to acquire a firearm or other means of self-defense. When the fire was blazing, it functioned wonderfully, but now it was extinguished. He didn't want to think about the fact that his hatchet and knife would have simply made the bear further angrier, and his bow was only effective against smaller prey. He was skeptical that the bow would propel the arrow far enough to do anything other than, once again, enrage the bear since he had never attempted to shoot anything larger than a foolish bird or rabbit with it.
That night, at the conclusion of the two weeks of warm weather, he snuggled up in his backpack. He continued adding wood to the fire, somewhat fearing that the bear might return. He kept trying to come up with a solution.
But the bear was not, in fact, his main enemy. Nor was any animal, even the wolf. Because he had forgotten the most important guideline—always, always pay attention to what was happening—in the midst of all the hunting, fishing, and survival activities, Brian had turned into his own worst enemy. Everything in nature has a purpose, and he had disregarded the signs that summer was coming to an end—that it had, in a sense, already ended—and that what was ahead would be the most hazardous thing he would encounter since the aircraft accident.
