Brooklyn, Colm Tóibín's sixth book, is hauntingly beautiful and devastating. It takes place in Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950s, when a young lady travels across the ocean to start again.
Eilis Lacey was up in a tiny Irish town during the post-World War II era. Despite her accounting expertise, she is unable to get employment in the dire Irish economy. Eilis decides she had to leave her frail mother and her captivating sister behind when an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor her in America, where she would live and work in a Brooklyn area "just like Ireland".
Eilis works at a Fulton Street department shop and, much to her surprise, falls in love. Tony, a large-family-oriented blond Italian, gradually wins her over with his gentle charm. After taking Eilis to Ebbets Field and Coney Island, he brings her back to his parents' two-room flat for supper. He mentions raising Dodgers-loving kids. Eilis's future is threatened by heartbreaking news from Ireland, just as she is starting to fall in love with Tony.
