From the author of The Return comes a darkly hilarious, terrifying tale about a young lady who learns to take what she wants from a witch who seems too wonderful to be true.

Annie has always played it safe and courteous. Annie is looking for a new beginning after her long-term lover abruptly ended their relationship. She accepts a teaching job that takes her upstate, from Manhattan to a little hamlet. She's in awe of the town's perfection and beauty. Everyone here is pleasant and amiable. Her new flat is equally wonderful, except for the strangely persistent spider problem.

Annie then meets Sophie. Annie is drawn to Sophie, who is gorgeous, kind, and captivating, and she wants to be friends with her. Above all, she wants Annie to stop apologizing and begin enjoying her own life. That is Sophie's way of life. Even though the other residents of the village appear to be a bit terrified of the brash Sophie, Annie can't help but be drawn to her and wants to spend as much time as possible with her. And um, ok. A few items exist. Sophie seems to possess a certain power, her home in the midst of the woods seems a touch otherworldly, and her look is strikingly timeless. But how could she not be able to be?
