Scarlett Dragna has never been outside the little island where she and her sister Tella reside with their father, who is both strong and nasty. Scarlett believes her hopes of attending Caraval—the far-off, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are now ended since her father has arranged for her to be married.

However, Scarlett's long-awaited invitation finally shows up this year. Scarlett is taken to the event by Tella, who has the assistance of an enigmatic sailor. But as soon as they get there, Legend, the genius behind Caraval, kidnaps Tella. It seems that Tella is the focal point of this season's Caraval, with the winner being the one who locates her first.

It has been explained to Scarlett that everything that takes place at Caraval is only a lavish show. Still, she finds herself caught up in a magical, heartbreaking, and romantic game. And whether Caraval exists or not, Scarlett has to locate Tella before the game's five nights are out, or else a dire chain of events will begin that would cause her sister to vanish forever.
