It's not a good moment for Mightily Oats to be a priest. He believed he had traveled to the realm of the mountains of Lancre to participate in a little religious rite. He is now embroiled in a conflict between witches and vampires and is unsure of which side is superior.

The witches include young Agnes, who is really unsure about everything; Magrat, who is attempting to blend witchcraft with childrearing; Nanny Ogg, who is too knowledgeable; and Granny Weatherwax, who is a major headache.

Furthermore, vampires are sophisticated creatures that are difficult to eradicate by using a garlic enema or by reaching for the curtains at the window and muttering, "I don't know about you, but isn't it a bit stuffy in here?" Their waistcoats are fancy and they have style. Now that they're not in the coffin, they want a taste of the future.

Though he wishes he had an axe, Mightily Oats is aware that he has a prayer.
