As a Shadowhunter, Cordelia Carstairs has been trained to fight demons since she was a little girl. She and her brother go to London in an attempt to save their family from bankruptcy after her father is charged with a horrible crime. Although Cordelia's mother wants to marry her off, Cordelia is certain that she will become a hero instead of a wife. Soon after, Cordelia runs into her childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale, and she is sucked into their world of glitzy ballrooms, occult salons, and secret assignments where mermaids and magicians coexist alongside vampires and warlocks. She has to keep her love for James a secret since he has promised to wed someone else.

However, a startling series of demon assaults that wreak havoc throughout London destroy Cordelia's newfound life. These demons are unlike any Shadowhunters have faced before; they are poisoned to death, walk in the sunshine, and seem to be unkillable. Quarantining London begins immediately. While stranded in the city, Cordelia and her pals learn that a sinister past has bestowed upon them extraordinary abilities and made them make a terrible decision that will expose the real, terrible cost of being a hero.
