When Children of the Mind opens, Jane, the advanced computer intelligence, is using her newly acquired powers to instantly transport humans and Pequeninos, as well as other pesky species, outside of the cosmos. She moves them to far-off habitable worlds for colonization using these abilities. The massive computer network that is linked to the Ansible is shutting down, and she is starting to lose her memory and focus. She has to figure out how to transfer her aiúa, or soul, to a human body in order to live.
