Lev Beniov is imprisoned for thieving during the horrific Nazi siege of Leningrad and placed in the same cell with a dashing deserter called Kolya. Lev and Kolya are offered the chance to save their own lives by following a ridiculous order: get twelve eggs for a strong Soviet colonel to use in his daughter's wedding cake. This is in place of being put to death. Lev and Kolya go out on a quest to locate the impossibly difficult in a city cut off from all supplies and suffering from unimaginable misery. They travel through the extreme anarchy of Leningrad and beyond enemy lines.

City of Thieves is a riveting, dramatic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age narrative with a totally modern sense for how boys become men. It is at turns perceptive and humorous, exciting and horrifying.
