Clockwork Prince

With the Shadowhunters, Tessa Gray has finally found sanctuary in the enchanted underbelly of Victorian London. However, that security turns out to be short-lived as renegade Clave troops scheme to remove Charlotte, her guardian, from her position as Institute director. Tessa will be left on the streets if Charlotte loses her job, making her easy pickings for the enigmatic Magister, who hopes to harness Tessa's abilities for his own sinister purposes.

Tessa learns that the Magister's battle against the Shadowhunters is very personal with the aid of the attractive, destructive Will and the ferociously loyal Jem. He holds them responsible for a past incident that destroyed his life. The group travels from the impoverished areas of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa learns that her heritage is darker than she had thought, from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor estate that harbors unimaginable horrors, all in an effort to uncover the mysteries of the past. They come to understand that one of their own has betrayed them and that the Magister himself is aware of everything they do when they come across a clockwork demon delivering a warning to Will.

Tessa's heart is pulled more and more to Jem, but she can't help but feel uneasy because of her love for Will despite his gloomy moments. Nevertheless, Will is evolving; the barrier he has erected around himself is disintegrating.
