A well written book about the odd and unexpected bond that two college students have with a married couple.
Twenty-one-year-old Frances is calm, perceptive, and attentive. She dedicates her life to a life of the intellect, as a college student and aspiring writer, and to her closest friend and partner in arms, the stunning and constantly self-possessed Bobbi. The two young ladies, who were in love in school, are now performing spoken-word poetry in Dublin when Melissa, a journalist, recognises their potential. Reluctantly, Frances is drawn into Melissa's circle and is fascinated by her tall, gorgeous husband and elegant house. According to Frances, private property is a cultural evil, and Nick, an unfulfilled performer who never quite reached his full potential, embodies patriarchy. However funny their flirting may appear at first, it soon leads to an unexpected closeness that none of them bargained for. Frances strives to manage her life, but her relationships with Nick, her tough and unhappy father, and eventually Bobbi all rebel against her. Frances's cerebral certainties start to give way to something new as she tries desperately to come to terms with her body's needs and vulnerabilities: an uncomfortable and unsettling manner of living moment by moment.
Conversations With Friends, written with gem-like accuracy and perceptive insight, brilliantly captures the joys and perils of adolescence."
