The world and the people find themselves at a crossroads in Robert Jordan's eleventh novel in the Wheel of Time series. As twilight approaches and the Shadow's influence intensifies, the world is headed toward a turning point.

Mat Cauthon discovers that he cannot retain the stolen Daughter of the Nine Moons, whom he is destined to marry, nor let her go in safety for the two of them, since the Shadow and the might of the Seanchan Empire are both pursuing them with deadly intent.

The only thing standing between Perrin Aybara and his wife Faile, a Shaido prisoner, is an alliance with the enemy. Is he able to be loyal to both himself and his buddy Rand? Perrin is prepared to trade his soul to win Faile's affection.

The youthful Amyrlin of the rebel Aes Sedai, Egwene al'Vere, is at Tar Valon, besieging the center of Aes Sedai power. She needs to prevail swiftly and with minimal bloodshed, though, because absent a reunion of the Aes Sedai, only the male Asha'man will be left to protect the world from the Dark One, and nothing, not even the Aes Sedai themselves, can prevent the Asha'man from assuming ultimate power.

Elayne Trakland battles for the Lion Throne in Andor, which is rightfully hers, but she is surrounded by adversaries and Darkfriends who are preparing to destroy her. If she doesn't succeed, the Dragon Reborn and the Shadow could take Andor down.

Everything has altered since the Dark One's taint was removed from the male half of the True Source by Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn himself. Yet nothing has, for only men who can channel believe that saidin is clean again, and a man who can channel is still hated and feared-even one prophesied to save the world. With his own life in jeopardy, Rand is forced to gamble once again since he is unsure of which of his friends are really his foes.
