Even though she was living the life she desired, her Korean identity started to seem more alien as she got older, went to college on the East Coast, worked in restaurants, played live with her band, and met the guy who would eventually become her husband. When Michelle was twenty-five years old, her mother was diagnosed with terminal illness. This drove Michelle to face her identity and recover the gifts of language, taste, and history from her mother.
