The only thing that has kept the unimaginable from happening since the Second Battle of Calderon is the bravery, tenacity, and selflessness of the kingdom of Alera's devoted inhabitants. This civil conflict may have destroyed Alera and left it vulnerable to its foes. To keep the kingdom together, devoted Alerans have sacrificed their lives and blood.

It was insufficient. It has merely been the quiet before the storm, despite the fact that the rebellion of the High Lords against the First Lord, Gaius Sextus, has been postponed for a number of years.

A civil conflict tears apart the kingdom.

Now, the ruthless and destructive revolt against Gaius has been started by the power-hungry High Lord of Kalare. Taken aback by the overwhelming might of Kalare's assault, Gaius Primus and the faithful armies of Alera are forced to battle with their most perilous ally—the equally disobedient and power-hungry High Lord and Lady of Aquitaine—in order to save the country.

Isana of Calderon, who is imprisoned in the besieged city of Ceres, escapes Kalare's assassination attempt and has to battle to protect herself from her assailants while also attempting to save the life of Fade, a wounded slave. As she finally faces the unpleasant realities of her own life, the secrets of her past loom big in both memory and action.

Cursor to the First Lord Countess Amara is forced to launch a last-ditch rescue effort in order to release prisoners kidnapped by Kalare and imprisoned despite the obedient High Lords' military neutrality. The outcome of her expedition might determine whether the realm survives or not. But will Lady Aquitaine, her ally, really want to help, or will she turn her back on the young Cursor and the First Lord she serves?

Young Tavi of Calderon, sent by a protective First Lord to leave the civil war theater, enlists in the First Aleran Legion as its juniormost officer, posing as a spy for the First Lord. However, when civil war breaks out, Tavi's captain finds out that Kalare has done the unimaginable by siding with the Canim, a vicious, terrifying enemy of the realm, who has arrived in greater numbers than any in recorded history. The young Cursor finds himself in charge after the First Aleran's command structure is destroyed by betrayal from inside. The Canim horde and the core of war-torn Alera are both faced by the flimsy, ill-equipped, and undertrained First Aleran.
