Before working for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Virgil Flowers—a tall, slender man in his late thirties who had been divorced three times and had hair much too long for a police officer—had a rough life. He was told by Lucas Davenport at the BCA that "we'll only give you the hard stuff." Flowers has been putting in a lot of hard work over the last three years, but nothing like this.
A home perched on a hill in the little village of Bluestem erupts into flames, trapping its owner, Judd, within. Flowers finds that there are plenty of reasons to despise him. Judd had carried out a fraud years before that had forced several local farmers out of business and some of them to commit suicide. Along with this, there are allegations of an out-of-wedlock daughter, participation with some crazy religious person, and other extremely risky behaviors with other men's spouses. To be honest, it would be difficult to find somebody who didn't hate him.
Flowers had not even been to Bluestem for that reason. There had been another murder three weeks before, really two. Bluestem hadn't seen a murder in years, so why are there now three? Even he is unaware of how personal it is, and he may not learn until it is too late. For he could be the next victim after all.
