A victim of the harsh winter weather in Montreal, Dr. Temperance Breman, a forensic anthropologist for the Province of Quebec and an American native, searches for a body to bury Sister Elisabeth Nicolet, who has been dead for more than a century and is now a candidate for sainthood. The first hint as to what would happen to the cloistered nun is found in an odd little casket hidden away in the crevices of a dilapidated church. Tempe's professional skills is needed to solve the mystery of Sister Elisabeth's life and death, which stands in stark contrast to the finds made at a burning chalet containing twisted and charred remains. Who were these individuals? What led them to suffer such a horrific end? Tempe enlists the help of Homicide Detective Andrew Ryan, with whom she has a contentious past, in the arson investigation. They are attracted into the lives of a strange and contentious professor, an intriguing commune, and a primate colony on an island in the Carolinas from the fire scene.
