A prize-winning, excitingly subversive first book about a Japanese lady who lies about being pregnant for nine months and longer to escape being harassed at work
Ms. Shibata, 34, discovers that she is expected to do all the menial duties at her new job—a cardboard tube manufacturing company—because she is the only woman there, having left her previous one due to sexual harassment. She declares one day that she is pregnant and finds the scent of her coworkers' dirty cups to be nauseating, so she is unable to throw them away. The only issue is that Ms. Shibata is not carrying a child.
Ms. Shibata does not have to serve coffee to anybody while she is pregnant. Ms. Shibata is not required to work overtime when pregnant. Ms. Shibata, who is pregnant, takes long showers, watches TV, relaxes, and even enrolls in an exercise class for expecting moms. However, Ms. Shibata, who is expecting, must also maintain a nine-month ruse. With the aid of shirts filled with towels and a journal app that allows her to record each phase of her "pregnancy," she's ready to stay in the game for the long run. But soon, the deception consumes her completely, and the line separating her life from her lie starts to blur.
Diary of a Void is a bizarre and bitterly funny cultural criticism that will undoubtedly go down in feminist history as a major work of literature.
