A major suspect in a double killing is Reva Ewing, a security expert for Roarke Enterprises and a former member of the Secret Service. Blair Bissel, the well-known artist, was her husband, and she had every right to wish to murder him. He was not only seeing someone else, but he was doing it with her closest friend as well.
However, the case's Lieutenant Eve Dallas thinks Reva is innocent. Eve's gut tells her that the apparent solutions are too easy, and the murder scene is too nicely orchestrated. Upon further investigation, she finds that the victim's art studio password was changed and all of the data on his computer was purposefully damaged almost exactly at the same moment a kitchen knife was inserted into his ribcage.
The actual danger, according to Roarke, is the computer assault. There are indications that his firm has been covertly planning for this disaster. Under a classified government contract, he and Reva were tasked with creating a software to defend against the Doomsday Group, a new kind of hacker. These highly skilled and well-funded techno-terrorists will murder anybody who approaches them while they break into large-scale computer networks, steal data, and damage them.
Before the virus spreads from one office to a business to the whole nation, Eve and Roarke must penetrate a very secretive government institution in order to reveal the corruption at its foundation.
