Nine-year-old Jai and his family reside in a jumble of tin-roofed homes at the end of the Purple metro line. They are crammed into market lanes that are too congested with people, dogs, and rickshaws. They also pass by stalls that smell of cardamom and sizzling oil. Even though his mother works as a maid in one of the opulent high-rises in the city, he can see the glittering lights of them from his doorway, but they appear to be a million miles away.

Jai thinks he's wiser than his friends Faiz (who actually works) and Pari (who gets the top grades), and he drools outside candy stores. He also watches too many reality police shows. Jai resolves to utilize his newly acquired crime-solving abilities from television to track down his missing classmate. He enlists Pari and Faiz to help him, and the two of them compile lists of potential interview subjects and destinations.

However, when other kids start going missing from their area, what starts off as a game takes a sinister turn. There are reports of soul-snatching djinns, frightened parents, and a nonchalant police force that Jai, Pari, and Faiz must deal with. Jai and his pals' life will never be the same as the disappearances get closer to home.

based on actual events as well as a wave of disappearances in urban India.
