1953. CA. Aloysius Archer, a World War II veteran and private detective, plans to celebrate the new year with his longtime friend Liberty Callahan, an aspiring actress. Eleanor Lamb, the screenwriter, interrupts to bring in Archer.

Eleanor starts to worry for her safety as things become worse—mysterious calls, the same automobile outside her home, a bloodied knife in her sink. Eleanor first discovers a dead corpse inside her house before going missing herself.

Archer recruits Callahan and Willie Dash to discover Eleanor and the culprit. From crime-ridden Las Vegas to opulent Hollywood to the seediest nooks of Los Angeles, the inquiry follows him to a place where attractive looks are the property of cunning con artists, police corruption may rival that of criminal activity, and those in positions of authority who kidnapped Archer's client will murder him in the process.
