In this darkly comedic book by the author of The Wishbones, a suburban New Jersey high school teacher deals with a student body election gone awry. slated for a 1998 theatrical release with Matthew Broderick in the lead role.Who gives a damn who wins the Winwood High School presidential election? Everyone—aside from Tracy Flick. Tracy is one of those girls with endless energy and desire who manages to fit everything in: she stars in the school musical, edits the school newspaper, and spends quality time with her favorite teacher. Tracy is determined to become the President of Winwood, and she will fulfill her wish. Her win is all but certain with a few weeks left until election day.

And that's precisely the issue, according to Mr. M, also known as Jim McAllister, a well-liked Winwood history instructor, faculty member, and adviser to the Student Government Association. For the sake of democracy and maybe to quell his resentment against Tracy Flick, Mr. M seeks for the ideal rival candidate. Paul Warren is a football star with heart and brains, a golden child eager to add more accomplishments to his scant record.

Mr. M is preoccupied with his unexpected attraction to his wife's closest friend while Winwood High is gripped by election fever. His two plays, one private and personal, the other public and political, unfold concurrently, involving all the participants in a turning point in their lives.

Election is a unique look at an average American high school and the exceptional individuals that attend it. It is half comedy, part soap opera.
