The release date for the English version of 'Ella Enchanted' by
Gail Carson Levine is Sep 1998. If you enjoy this novel, it is available for buy as a paperback from Barnes & Noble or Indigo, as an ebook on the Amazon Kindle store, or as an audiobook on Audible.
Ella is unintentionally cursed at birth by a foolish young fairy called Lucinda, who gives her the "gift" of obedience. Ella has to do what she is told by everyone. This curse could have intimidated a different girl, but not spunky Ella: "Lucinda's spell created a rebel out of me, instead of making me meek. Or maybe that's just how I was born." Ella's life and well-being seem to be in great danger when her loving mother passes away, leaving her in the care of her avaricious and generally absent father. Later, she is betrayed by a stepmother who despises her and her two wicked stepsisters. She sets off on a journey for freedom and self-discovery, but her cunning and sensual demeanor serve her well as she battles ogres, makes friends with elves, and falls in love with a prince while searching for Lucinda to break the curse. Granted, there's a glass slipper, a pumpkin coach, and a happily ever after, but this is the most amazing, hilarious, and thought-provoking rendition of Cinderella you've ever laid eyes on.
The analysis of conventional female roles in fairy tales by Gail Carson Levine deviates from the source material in several delightful ways. Ella, despite her desire to be free from subordination, takes issues into her own hands with a strong sense of ambition. In actuality, she is the one who saves the prince in the end, but their relationship is harmonious and built on respect and laughter. Ella Enchanted is the recipient of several honors, including a Newbery Honor.
