A little girl named Ella Minnow Pea lives contentedly on the made-up island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nevin Nollop, the creator of the famous pangram *"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," is the inspiration for Nollop's name. Ella is now forced to take action to protect her friends, family, and other residents from the island's Council, which is becoming more and more dictatorial and has outlawed the usage of certain alphabetic characters as they tumble from a memorial monument honoring Nevin Nollop. The letters vanish from the narrative at the same rate as they gradually fall off the statue. The outcome is a linguistic masterwork that will enthrall word lovers worldwide, as well as a poignant and humorous account of one girl's struggle for freedom of speech.
*Pangram: a word or statement composed of every letter in the alphabet
