Emily Wilde is a professor at Cambridge University and one of the world's greatest authorities on faerie studies. She is developing the first compendium of faerie knowledge in history and is a brilliant scholar and thorough researcher. However, Emily Wilde struggles with people. She was never good at striking up conversations at parties or even getting invited. She also enjoys the companionship of the Fair Folk, her dog, and her literature.

Emily thus has no desire to make friends with the rough residents of the hardscrabble hamlet of Hrafnsvik when she gets there.
