Despite their differences, Elisabetta, Marco, and Sandro become the closest of friends as children. Sandro is a Jewish math whiz who is nice and considerate. He is the son of a lawyer and a doctor. Elisabetta is a fiery beauty who aspires to be a novelist. Marco is the brazen and athletic kid in a family of professional bikers. As their friendship develops into love, Sandro and Marco vie for Elisabetta's affections. All of that, however, starts to change in the fall of 1937 when Mussolini seizes power, uniting the fascists in Italy with Hitler's Nazis and changing the rules that govern Rome itself. Over time, the three most important things in their lives—their relationships, their homes, and their families—all come under unprecedented strain.

As World War II breaks out and anti-Semitism gains legal footing, the trio understands that Mussolini was merely the beginning. Once the Nazis take control of Rome, fresh crimes against the city's Jewish population follow, leading to a horrifying betrayal in the end.
