College student Quincy Carpenter, the lone survivor of a slaughter on the magnitude of a horror film, went on vacation with five pals ten years ago. Suddenly she was a part of a club that no one wants to be a part of, a group of like-minded survivors dubbed the Final Girls by the media. Sam, who confronted the Sack guy while working at the Nightlight Inn; Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a knife wielded by a college dropout; and Quincy, who fled through the woods while wounded in order to avoid Pine Cottage and the guy she just addresses as Him. All three of the females are trying to get beyond their nightmares and, with it, each other. The media tries to meet them, but they never do.
Quincy is now doing well, if not better than before, since her doctor prescribed Xanax. She has a wonderful flat, a successful baking blog, a kind almost-fiance named Jeff, and a calming influence in Coop, the policeman who saved her life all those years ago. The past is in the past, and her memory won't even let her remember what happened that evening.
That is, until Sam, the second Final Girl, shows up on Quincy's doorstep and Lisa, the first, is discovered dead in her bathtub, her wrists slashed. With Sam rushing into Quincy's life like a tornado, she appears determined to force her to relive the past, which has progressively worse outcomes. Quincy begins to wonder if Sam is really pursuing her. Quincy's life also becomes a race against time as she tries to separate Sam's lies from his truths, avoid hungry reporters and the police, and—most importantly—remember what actually happened at Pine Cottage before the ten-year project is completed—after fresh information about Lisa's death surface.
