For 10 years, Lumatere, the beloved of Finnikin of the Rock and his guardian, Sir Topher, has been away from home. Not since the horrible times when the realm was cursed and the royal family was killed. But then Finnikin is summoned to meet Evanjalin, a young woman with an incredible claim: the heir to the throne of Lumatere, Prince Balthazar, is alive.

Since only she can guide them to the heir, Evanjalin is adamant about going home. Finnikin is impacted by her optimism and conceit as they travel together. He starts to think that Prince Balthazar, his boyhood pal, could reappearance. And that their cursed people will be able to enter Lumatere and be reunited with those trapped inside. He even thinks he will locate his father, who is behind bars.

But Evanjalin is not what she seems. And the reality is going to put Finnikin's confidence in her and himself to the test.
