Sylvie Serfer had voluminous opinions, broad hips, and wild hair when she first met Richard Woodruff in law school. Many years later, Sylvie has transformed into the perfect wife of a politician, with straightened and colored hair and fitted knit suits in lieu of her hippie-style clothes. She regretfully admits, at fifty-seven, that her job is to take care of her husband, the senator, and maintain a twenty-pound weight loss from her twenties.

The youngest daughter of the Woodruffs, Lizzie, is a recovering addict who lives by the motto HALT (Hungry? Angry? Alone? Weary?) aids her in maintaining control of her life. But danger seems to find her every time. Her older sister, Diana, an emergency room physician, has everything Lizzie failed to achieve-a husband, a young son, the perfect home-and yet she's trapped in a loveless marriage.
