in Chicago, vamps!

One would think that news stories like that would have incited the good people of the Windy City to arm themselves against us bloodthirsting maniacs. Instead, ten months later, we're living the life of luxury as Hollywood elites, fighting off paparazzi who are just marginally less deadly than slayers with crosses and stakes. To be clear, Joe Public isn't exactly happy to live among the undead, but at least they haven't overrun the castle just yet.

That will all change, however, when they find out about the Raves—mass feeding events when vampires gather people like livestock and overindulge in alcohol. Since most civilized vampires ask for permission before taking a huge sip of the crimson substance, they put humans at rest by disapproving of this kind of conduct. But for a rookie reporter trying to make a good impression on his wealthy family, it doesn't make for compelling prose.

My "master," the magnificently preserved, centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, now desires that I get back in touch with my own affluent family and work as a mediator between humans and vampires, while still keeping the darker sides of our life out of the public eye. However, there is someone—someone with a long-standing grudge—who doesn't want humans and vamps to act civilized.
