Sam Statler and Annie Potter, who recently got married, are ecstatic to leave New York behind and begin a new life in Sam's quaint upstate New York hamlet. Or, as it turns out, a life in which Annie lives alone most of the time while Sam, her husband, the therapist, puts in long hours ministering to the egos of his (mostly female) customers in his downstairs office.

Sam has no idea that the room upstairs can hear every word of his sessions due to a vent in his ceiling. The wife of the pharmacist, thinking of getting a divorce. The famous painter who finds her boyfriend unsatisfactory during intimate moments. Who could not listen? Everything is good until Sam decides to go to work and not come home, upsetting Sam and Annie's happily ever after. The French girl in the green mini Cooper then turns up.
