Great Expectations follows Pip's journey from childhood through a number of traumatic experiences to adulthood as he travels from the marshes of Kent to bustling, commercial London. Along the way, he meets a wide range of fascinating characters, such as Miss Havisham, who is imprisoned due to her unhappy past and lives with her ward, the conceited, beautiful Estella.
Pip has to come to terms with who he really is and what his own objectives and values are. The main issue Dickens's book Great Expectations raises is whether or not these ideals enable one to flourish in the complicated environment of early Victorian England.
Dickens's short working notes, the serial installments and chapter divisions in various editions, and the original, rejected finale are all included in this version. The authoritative Clarendon text is also used.
