Years after making his escape, Hannibal lives the good life in Florence, playing beautiful music by serial killer/composer Henry VIII and murdering almost no one himself while assuming the persona of the learned Dr. Fell, curator of a wealthy family's palace. Unfortunately for Clarice, after surviving an FBI gunfight gone awry in the novel's action-packed opening scene, her adversary Paul Krendler sets her up for failure. Since Clarice is on suspension, sadly, Pazzi, an Italian who resembles the avaricious traitors portrayed in Dante's Inferno, is the first police officer to discover Hannibal. Mason Verger is a terrifying figure who Pazzi is on the lookout for. Verger's enormous fortune kept him out of prison when he was a young man and was nabbed for raping minors. All he needed was Dr. Lecter's treatment. Verger, whose massive, vicious moray eel can now swim figure eights and eat fish, is paralyzed save for one crab-like hand and is on a respirator as a result of the therapy. He is obsessed with giving Lecter to other vicious creatures.
