Joseph Conrad's work Heart of Darkness began as a three-part serial in Blackwood's Magazine in 1899. It is a narrative within a story that centers on Charlie Marlow, a figure who tells a group of men on board a moored ship about his trip. His early years as a ferry boat captain are the subject of the narrative. Charlie finds himself interested in investing in Kurtz, a government-employed ivory procurement agent, despite the fact that his job was to transfer ivory downriver. His reputation as a clever messenger of development preceded him, but in "one of the darkest places on earth," Kurtz has now become a deity among the locals. Marlow believes Kurtz has lost his mind, which is something else.
Heart of Darkness, a meditation on corruptive European colonialism and a voyage into the nightmarish mind of one of the corrupted, is regarded as one of the most important books ever published.
