March Murray, along with her fifteen-year-old daughter Gwen, returns to her childhood home in a small Massachusetts village to attend the burial of her beloved maid, Judith Dale, after almost twenty years of living in California. However, going back to her birthplace also reunites her with March's ex-boyfriend and soul mate, Hollis. The adolescent Hollis was the result of many foster homes and an abandoned kid until March's father took him in as a boarder and raised him like a son. However, the intense affection between March and Hollis was not your typical sibling bond. March waited for Hollis for three long years after a little argument, wondering what she had done wrong.

When March sees Hollis again, she becomes acutely aware of the decisions she has made and those made by those around her, such as her brother Alan, whose tragic past has left him grieving and turning to alcohol for comfort, and Mrs. Dale, who knew more about love than March could have ever imagined. March's intense desire to Hollis puts her marriage, her bond with her daughter, and her personal happiness in danger as she tries to go back in time.
